The 2016 World Championship challenger, born in Crimea and playing under the Ukrainian flag until 2009 when he switched to the Russian Federation, is aiming for the Federation’s President chair. As an unremorseful Putin supporter, Karjakin supported Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, and in February 2022 he published an Open Letter to Vladimir Putin in which he supported the Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.

His constant Twitter propaganda and the “public support of an unjustified military action” led the FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission to ban Karjakin for six months from participating as a player in any FIDE rated chess competition. On September 25th, 2022, the disqualification was over with Karjakin tweeting on a “Putin Team” jacket.

A couple of days ago Russian media reported that Sergey Karjakin is running for the post of President of the Russian Chess Federation, a nomination received by the Chechen Federation. Karjakin also announced his candidacy on his Telegram channel and said that he particularly wants to take Russian chess to a fundamentally new level.
